Crochet basics taught at library’s ‘Sewing Circle’ Nov. 18 (STILLWATER, OK / Nov. 7, 2013) – Handicraft fans can learn a new skill Monday, Nov. 18, at 6:30 p.m. when Moises Flores comes to the Stillwater Public Library’s Sewing Circle Reading Society to provide crochet instruction. Crochet enthusiast Flores is self-taught and sells his creations online. “I began crocheting in 2011 while I was unemployed and looking for something to sell around the community,” said Flores. “I began making simple hats, but taught myself more skills so that I could start making plushies. At one point, I was making an average of forty plushies a month.” Flores plans to teach participants the simple skills that helped him get started. “Crocheting is a very easy discipline to learn,” said Flores. “Once you know the basics, the sky is the limit. I personally do not follow patterns. I learn the basic fundamentals of a project, and then create my own patterns. Books and patterns can help, but nothing beats the power of the imagination.” According to Flores, there are big pay-offs with having even a basic knowledge of this handicraft. “Crocheting can be a fun and relaxing experience for all people,” said Flores. “When you finish a project you can see the results of what you have created and you feel a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. When you give someone a homemade blanket versus a store bought one, you are passing a small piece of yourself to another. The joy it brings to others is great and they cherish the gift more because you took the time to make them something personal.” The Sewing Circle Reading Society meets the third Monday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The group sews, knits and does other handicraft work while listening to stories read aloud, enjoying a tea service and visiting.
