Crocheters take heart! After Patrick Desjardins earlier comments, I did some experimenting--because it was that or work on my syllabi for next semester. ;-) I used the same spiral pattern that Patricia Conaway Lamberti used earlier--Im a little obsessed with it. Here is what I discovered: If you use a pattern that is already pretty dense, you can go down a hook size or two and/ or make double crochet stitches into half-double crochet (just make sure that you decrease the other stitches too). The first picture is a size G hook with hdc--it is more rug-like than blanket. The second is the regular pattern with a size G hook rather than the size I the pattern recommends. The last picture is using the size I hook with the hdc in place of the dc. Either of the second two are dense enough to work. My knitting is so slow that I have a scarf project that should be registered for Kindergarten next fall so it was worth the experiment. Good luck!
