Cross Notes, Tuesday, September 10 - Jesus said, “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in their midst.” He is here today. He is present in the life of every believer. And He is inviting us today to His table. But knowing that the Lord’s Supper is the table of the King, there are several important considerations that we ought to be aware of. The King decides who is invited, and He invites only those who are His children. Some people may have a problem with that fact, but they shouldn’t. Jesus didn’t invite everyone to the upper room when He instituted the Supper. And the early churches didn’t invite everyone when they observed it. The Scripture teaches that the Lord’s Supper is a church ordinance. So only those who have confessed faith in Jesus as their Saviour and have been baptized by immersion to give testimony of their faith should participate in taking this meal. We don’t require that you be a member of our Church, but we do expect that you have completed what we understand are the Biblical requirements for taking the Lord’s Supper. To accept the Lord’s Supper when you have not met the Biblical requirements cheapens what Christ did for you on the Cross. (From the sermon “Come to the Table” Cross Roads Baptist Church 9/8/13)
