Cross River: Governor Liyel Imoke’s Political Game Plan Category: REPORTS Published on Tuesday, 07 October 2014 09:20 Written by Okoi Obono-Obla Share The bait Governor Liyel Imoke is using to make the Yakurr People in his Party, PDP, to continue to remain loyal to him is that the Party would zone the position of Deputy Governor to Yakurr. This has led to Politicians in Yakurr falling over themselves jostling on who will be picked as the running mate to the Governorship candidate of the PDP for next year election. But it is all a hoax! I can assure you that Governor Imoke and the PDP have not the slightest intention to zone the position of running mate to PDP Governorship Candidate to Yakurr. Governor Imoke wants to continue to remain relevant after the end of his tenure. Governor Imoke wants to be a Minister if the PDP wins the Presidential election so he does not want any strong politician from Yakurr. He does not want a politician that is a real leader that will be the rallying point of the Yakurr People. Please believe me! Governor Imoke wants a stooge from Yakurr to continue to represent the Abi/Yakurr in the House of Representatives despite the fact that the thinking in Yakurr is that the next member to represent the Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency should be from Abi Local Government Area. Governor Imoke does not also want a strong personality from Abi to be in any office of influence come the next dispensation. Governor Imoke desires that he should remain the only strong political force in the old Obubra Division in the next 10 (Ten) Years! Governor Imoke is angling for a Ministerial appointment if the PDP wins the Presidential Election. Governor Imoke deludes himself that he is the only Politician from Cross River Central who should be the only cock crowing. He has easily forgotten that he was a brought from political obscurity to national limelight when former Governor Clement Ebri in 1993 handed over the Central District Senatorial seat to him, on a platter of gold, when he was barely 30 years old. Governor Imoke has carried on as someone without a c modicum of conscience as he has taken upon himself that task of destroying Yakurr and refusing to show gratitude to Governor Clement Ebri by denying him an opportunity to nominate a Chairmanship candidate from Mkpani when he wanted it. Governor Imoke has been unfair to the Yakurr people. He has treated the Yakurr with absolute contempt and disdain since he became a powerful political figure from 1999 till this moment. He has encouraged and promoted political schism in Yakurr. He has through shenanigan and chicanery ensured that no politician who is truly loved by the people emerges in the scene. He has enthroned a mediocre and mendicant political leadership in Yakurr. He has denied empowerment of anybody in Yakurr. He has kept the Yakurr people on the fringe. In Abi Local Government Area, he has played the Agbo People against the Bahumono People. He has continued to encourage in fighting among the Bahumono People. The Bahumono People are so divided and engulfed in internecine and bloody fighting that has reduced any spirit of brotherhood among them. Governor Imoke has woefully and spectacularly failed to settle the problem between Ebijakara and Ebom since 2007 when he came into power. Today Ebijakara has been eliminated specie of from the face of the earth. Currently the People of Ediba and Usumutong are engaged in a bitter and bloody confrontation that might likely escalate into an open war. Despite the various crises within Abi Communities where Governor Imoke comes from, he has shown total indifference and luke-warm-ness that is both confounding and amazing. The indifference shown by Governor Imoke in the ongoing skirmishes between Usumutong and Ediba is deliberate and part of his game plan to ensure that his catchment area is unstable. Governor Imoke has also used similar manoeuvres to disempower the Obubra people and reduced them to political nonentities. Another aspect that Governor Imoke is using deft political manoeuvres to manipulate the People of the North is the issue of Governorship candidate of the PDP in the next election. The truth of the matter is that Governor Imoke wants the candidate of his Party in the forthcoming election to come from the Cross River South. He is just selling a dummy to the people of Cross River North. I have said this repeatedly. Please let us not buy this dummy! In his heart of hearts Governor Imoke wants a Governor to come from Cross River South. Governor Imoke has laid landmines for an imposition to happen in Cross River North. He has encouraged all the Aspirants in his Party from the North by giving them financial assistance, encouraging and giving them the impression that he supports each and every one of them. Governor Imoke knows that at the end of the day none of the army of Aspirants in the North would agree to work together with each other. They would fight to finish and in the confusion and anarchy that would reign he would take advantage to tell the people of the North look I gave you an opportunity but you frittered it away; the slot would go to the South! I appeal to our People to see the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the alternative and embrace it in full (Do not trivialize my appeal as selling my party. This is beyond that. Let wisdom and exigency prevail for once)! We should refrain from the backward and retrogressive politics of putting all our eggs in one basket. That is why the likes of Governor Imoke take us all for granted and think that he and his cronies are the only people that matter and are entitled to be the ‘Pillar and/or Caterpillar’ in the political firmament both at the Local Government, State and Federal Levels! We should stop playing one dimensional politics. Okoi Obono-Obla
