Cross-country road trip, day 2: Drove through 5 states today - Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. Ending the day just past Houston - and I can confirm that it does indeed take 2 HOURS to drive from one side of Houston to the other during rush hour. After 2 days, weve only just left the Gulf of Mexico. I dont know what I expected, but what I I found were vulnerable coastal cities, magical bayous, and hours and hours of driving through rice fields. The oil industry leaves a terrible blight on the lands of these communities, but also appears to be the only employer for hundreds of miles. The billboards along the highway seem to be evenly split between religious messages and casinos. The region clearly suffers grinding poverty, but is very proud of its culture and traditions, which are visible even at 75 mph. I was greatly disappointed not to encounter a true Cajun accent even in deepest Acadia.
