Crossing by sea from the North to South Island in New Zealand or vice versa means a 3 hour plus Cook Strait crossing, one of the most turbulent crossings in the world on a rough day,but very scenic and beautiful when the weather is good. Almost half the voyage is consumed by the passage from Picton through the Queen Charlotte sounds , with an amazing entrance into Wellington passing Pencarrow Head , unchanged except for the lighthouses since Captain Cook set eyes on the land. The oil painting shows the mv Arahura built in Denmark in the early 1980s making one of her daily crossings out of Wellington with Pencarrow astern as part of the Interislander service.Oil on canvas panel 20x30 painted by W.W.Trickett and commissioned by NZ writer Fiona Richter, and now hangs in the South Island .
