Cruising past a Cyldesdale on an uphill slog. Hes a commuter on a dirty hybrid with a rucksack but lycra 3/4s and going faster than he looks even with the poor technique (damm his long and strong legs). No scalp but happy to go past also because he keeps anticipating the green lights and pavement hops a few queuing cars. Maybe 5k later on my ride, I get to a bit of an uphill sprint Ive decided to attack (read done it once or twice and want to get top strava spot on 1st proper attempt). And look whos putting a dig in using a spinny gear on the steep bit. I change down early so I dont struggle while cruising past again. This time the hammer is down, snot drooling, gasping for air on the 2nd almost flat half of the 800m drag. No looking back, cannot get overtaken but its not going to happen anyway, hes cooked. Shift when possible, use the tailwind. Its good to feel the burning effort in the lungs and legs again. I take a couple of turnings, recovering and check behind. Good, hes not coming this way. Not yet. Id wanted to ask him what route hed taken that was so much better than mine. But then I needed to attack the segment and also scalp him again. Not a nodder, but still no points. Victory feels empty. I got 3rd on strava,... 10 seconds back over 1.37. Oh well.
