Cruising upstream on the Rhine on a fairly bleak winter day (more vivid pictures are available elsewhere). First picture is of the Lorelei, a famed rock formation at a bend in the river at the narrowest point on the Rhine between the North Sea and Switzerland. The Lorelei and the legendary mermaids in its vicinity (sometimes causing shipping disasters) have been a central feature of folklore, literature, art, and music in Germany and elsewhere over many centuries. The other pictures are of castles in the general area of the Lorelei. (Alas, we saw no mermaids!)
