Crystal Palace will forbid Manchester United fans wearing Eric - TopicsExpress

Crystal Palace will forbid Manchester United fans wearing Eric Cantona masks from entering Selhurst Park on Saturday. Cantona was banned for nine months and fined £20,000 in January 1995 for his infamous kung-fu kick on Palace supporter Matthew Simmons at the south London stadium. United supporters have hatched a plan to pay tribute to the United legend by wearing Cantona masks and scarves. The ploy has angered Palace fans despite the fact over 19 years have passed since the incident. Some feel the tribute is in poor taste as three months after the kung-fu kick incident a Palace supporter, 35-year-old Paul Nixon, died during an outbreak of violence at a pub eight miles away from Villa Park before the FA Cup semi-final between the two clubs. After a 2-2 draw, Manchester United won the replay 2-0. Palace officials will stop any supporters wearing a Cantona mask from entering the ground, while those who try to put them on during the game will be told to remove it or face ejection. The stadium manager has been informed of the issue and will instruct staff to carry out the directions ahead of kick off. The club’s decision not to permit United fans to wear the novelty masks stems from fact their faces would not be identifiable on the CCTV cameras. -Jason Source: dailymail #mufc
