Cuauhtemóc Cárdenas jostled, threatened and called a killer by Zocalo protestors Molly Molloy, frontera Commentary from Jim Creechan... The crowd attack on Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas and calling him a PRD killer (asesino) is truly a watershed incident that suggests Mexico is once again on the precipitous edge of a failed state. eluniversaltv.mx/videos/v_b50b0a7fd0224327a6450a4fe3cd7394.html Asesino, le gritan manifestantes a Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas en el Zócalo Los manifestantes que reclaman por la desaparición de 43 normalistas de Ayotzinapan lo acusaron de ser parte del sistema y de las autoridades perrredistas coludidas con el crimen organizado There have been several national protests over the murder of student teachers in Iguala Guerrero Mexico. 43 students missing and in in all probability dead. At least 17 charred bodies were discovered in narco-graves where they had been shot in the head, dumped into pits and set on fire with diesel oil. The mayor of Iguala was an active member of the leftist PRD with known links to gunmen (sicarios of los Guerreros Unidos) working in the employ of the Beltran Leyva brothers (cartel). The mayors narco-connections were known for at least 18 months after being accused of threatening to “happily” shoot another politician in the face with a shotgun. After the students disappeared, the mayor fled (along with the State Security director). The PRD has been under-attack for allowing him to remain in the party even though his drug links were known and documented in online videos. PRD leaders (pejoratively known as los Chuchos) are desperately hoping to manage public opinion . The video showing the attack on Cuauhtemóc Cárdenas demonstrates there no chance that the party will be able to stake out a moral highroad. The moral leader of the party IS Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas: the party formed around him when he broke from the PRI and challenged Carlos Salinas de Gortari in 1988. Besides those credentials, he is the son of Mexicos most beloved President (Lazaro Cárdenas) and has been heretofore seen as beyond reproach. This video shows him being seriously threatened by angry protestors near the Zocalo and being subjected to threatening shouts of killer. I believe that this represents a watershed moment for Mexicos political left and one from which there is little chance of recovery. The only reason that other parties (the PRI, PAN) may not benefit is that they are involved in trying to establish their own credentials as morally honest and are determined to overcome their own personal track-records of outright corruption and human rights violations. Pobre Mexico, tan lejos de dios....
