Cubs Win Close Games vs. Freshman Bulldogs The Waller High School White Freshman Football Team traveled to Brenham on Thursday, September 19. On the opening kick- off, #37 D’metree Williams brought the crowd to their feet on a 70 yard dash for a touchdown. It is hard to believe, but there was a yellow flag lying on the turf. The penalty was a block in the back negating the touchdown. The white team improved this week on offense. Leading the way was quarterback #7 Michael Nickles who had several tough runs including a sweep to score a 2 point conversion. Nickles also played linebacker and had several tackles in the game. Fullback #20, Cole Milligan had a good game with several bone crushing blocks, and ran the ball hard. The coaches were impressed with the two tailbacks #37 D’metree Williams and #21 Lamark Williams. Lamark Williams scored on a 60 yard run off of a sweep play, showing tremendous breakaway speed. The offensive line played a good game led by center #53, Stone Griffin and left guard #66, Montana Morgan. The defense held the Cubs to only two touchdowns with great play by linebackers #30, Tristan Lampkin and #31 Cody Knight, who both had several tackles behind the line of scrimmage. The Dogs were facing a third and three late in the fourth quarter when tailback #37 D’metree Williams broke for a touchdown that would have tied up the game, but you could hear the hush of the crowd when there it was again, the yellow flag lying on the turf. Holding was called against the Bulldogs, and the touchdown was called back. The Dogs watched the time click off the clock. Brenham Cubs 14, Waller Bulldogs 8. The Waller Freshman Maroon Football Team crossed the Brazos on Thursday night, September 19, on their way to battle their arch rivals, the Brenham Cubs. After the kick off, the Dogs drove the length of the field scoring their first touchdown. Leading the charge were the two big guards, #54 Quentin White and #57, Isaias Juarez Jr., who both had solid games with several key blocks. Wesley Geigley, #11, scored on a quarterback sneak up the middle. Later on in the game, tailback #33, Travis Johnson brought the crowd to their feet with a tremendous 40 yard run for a touchdown. The defense played hard led by linebackers #29, Jacob Lemons and #34 Austin Bennett. The middle run game was stuffed by two angry tackles, #22 Jason Rosales, and #40 Lance Simon who both contributed with several tackles. The cornerbacks, #9, Aaron Tilton and #35 Mickey Brewer shut down the Cubs passing game. And the safeties #45 Cameron Singleton and #46 Justin Swarb both made excellent open field tackles to stop touchdown runs. It was late in the fourth quarter, with the Dogs penetrating deep into Cub territory. It was another big third down with three yards to go for a first down when #33 Travis Johnson, with his tough running style carried the ball down to the Brenham ten yard line. It was first and goal and the taste of victory had the Dogs scratching to get in the end zone to tie the game. When I know it is hard to believe, there was that yellow flag on the turf. Holding against the Bulldogs was called once again. With time ticking down, the dogs faced a third and thirteen and could not get it done. And the final score on the scoreboard, Cubs 21, Bulldogs 14. The coaches were proud of the boys and the way the young players played. And they are looking to get rewarded for their hard effort next Thursday, the 26 at home against the Willis Wildcats at 5 and 6:30 p.m.
