Cultism: Rivers State Police suspend youth bodies in Rivers MAY 7, 2014 The Rivers State Police Command on Wednesday announced the suspension of youth bodies and activities following the increasing rate of cultism in the state. The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Tunde Ogunsakin, said in a statement issued in Port Harcourt at about 5.30pm that political rallies still remained banned in all parts of the country in line with Section 99 (1) of the Electoral Act. Ogunsakin explained in the statement signed by the Assistant Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, he had directed area commanders and divisional police officers to clamp down on any youth body or groups organising meetings without requisite security coverage. “After a critical review of the recent happenings in the state especially the escalation of cult activities, it has become necessary to place a suspension on the activities of all youth bodies and groups. “As the Chief Law Enforcement Officer in Rivers State, I have a responsibility to ensure that all gatherings for whatever reason, whether politically motivated or otherwise are carried out within the ambits of the law and in a way that the security of the state will not be threatened in any manner. “I have already directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to clamp down on any youth body or group that holds or organizes meetings without the requisite security coverage. “Such groups or gathering by whatever name so called will be considered to be an unlawful assembly and shall be made to face the full wrath of the law as there will be no hiding place for them,” the state commissioner said. He, however, urged the people of the state to go about their businesses, enjoining them to be vigilant and report any suspicious movement to the police.
