Cultural differences: On ones birthday in Myanmar a person tries to do as much wholesome as one can. For example to go to a monastery to make an offering for the sangha, to listen to Dhamma; to go to a pagoda to make an offering to the Buddha is very very common. On ones birthday in the west usually a person does what is unwholesome-indulging in five sensual pleasures and offering the same for his friends... I think New Year situation is similar. We all know what is a common practice in the west... In Myanmar- the New Year holiday lasts 10 days. During this time most of the people will go to a monastery and practice mediation, listen to the Dhamma, observe 8 precepts. A very common practice is to take robes for that time, so that one can practice higher sila (virtue). People try to accumulate as much wholesome as they can. Maybe quite a few do it only during this time in the whole year, but isnt it better than not doing at all...or following western example...
