Cumberland Mountain Ministries Inc. 2013 Newsletter Here at Cumberland Mountain Outreach we are having a year to remember! We are so amazed at how wonderful it has been and would like to share with you some of the achievements that the Lord has enabled us to accomplish through your generosity and the generosity of people like you. All of the support that has been given to our Emergency Food Bank this year has established it as a truly reliable resource. We give an average of 20 food boxes to the needy families of Lee County each month. Each food box contains three days worth of food. We have been able to restock our supplies through local churches and the generous individuals who donate simple to prepare foods such as oatmeal, fruit cups, pop tarts, Vienna sausages, peanut butter, crackers, chicken noodle soup, Ramen noodles and macaroni and cheese. If you would like to donate any of these items they can be dropped of at the CMO office, it takes just $25 dollars for a family to eat for three days a check can be mailed to 102 E. 3rd Street Beattyville, KY 41311. Please designate food pantry. One of our favorite food ministries is the Kids Backpack program. Working with Lee County Schools and the Family Resource Center, we are able provide meals over the weekend for 75 at risk children in Lee County. It is over the weekends that the children go hungry without school meals. We provide ready to eat foods put in their backpacks on Friday to sustain them till Monday. What if the cycle of poverty can be reversed just by preventing the effects of starvation on their brains? The effects of starvation on the brain cause a lack of concentration, loss of motor skills, and increased likelihood of anxiety and depression and eventually lead to brain function decreases, leaving the victims/children in a state of fatigue on Monday when they return to school. We are currently only able to provide food for the last two weekends of the month as this is the time the children are most likely to be without. With your help we will be able to provide for them every weekend of the month. The Second Hand Rose, the onsite thrift store, is ran by Mrs. Rose Roberts, brings so many benefits to this community that I thought I would take a moment to list a few. It is through the donations that come in that we are able to keep the mission open year round and provide a resource to the community. We have been able to give over 200 children 3 outfits and 1 pair of shoes along with new undergarments and socks for the new school year. The Second Hand store takes on a whole new purpose at Christmas time turning into Santa’s workshop where the children and parents are able to come in and shop! We are also able to partner with the Department of Children and Families in the KTAP program in which we receive volunteers. The home repair program this summer can only be described as a success! We are in awe of what God did through the work camps and church team that volunteered. With 17 homes having received repairs we are truly thankful for all the hard work that was done. The camp also received care and repairs. It has never looked so good! One of the programs that are nearest to our hearts is the summer Vacation Bible School Program. Volunteer church groups and the staff at CMO have worked together again this summer to provide 5 weeks of 3 day, day camps for the children. The children are given a day of crafts and games along with breakfast, lunch and snacks! With the generous donations of Americans Helping Americans we were able to take the children swimming and even taught four kids how to swim. We are now in the process of preparing for our Christmas Celebration. It is our hope that you will partner with us this year to provide gifts for approximately 800 people. Our Christmas Celebration last year was such a blessing so many! We had 363 people who enjoyed a meal of Johnny marzetti, roasted marshmallows and hot chocolate. Pictures with Santa, bingo with candy and a coloring contest with prizes! Everyone left with a new winter coat, a new blanket for each family and two presents for every child. There was 100 gifts given to the Nursing Home, 83 gifts given to September Place Senior Citizens housing, 210 gifts for Three Forks Regional Jail inmates and 40 gifts given to the Geri Young Mentally Challenged facility. Message from Cindy I would like to thank everybody who had any part of this ministry. It is because of Jesus working through you that we are having one of the best years EVER! Thanks again and hope you continue to be a part of this dynamic ministry as we reach the lost here in the Appalachian Mountains. In His Love, Cindy
