Cumberworth 2nds vs Homfirth Town reserves AWAY 1st November 2014 This week started with a message going out that any blue items of clothing incurred a fine. Worryingly this caused confussion for a couple of players and caused some of the most stupid questions ive ever heard. 1/ does denim count? 2/ if an items grey but has a bit of blue on it then does that count? Naming no names but Tony Fairburn and Ross Baxter were fined for their stupidity. Onward and upward for our members of Mensa there!! Well onward to the game and the Cumberworth team turned up to Holmfirth in a bouyant mood having had some good results in previous weeks. This sooned turned into a horror show though as the rapid pace of the Holmfirth forwards caused allsorts of problems for Cumberworth. The league leaders raced into a 3-0 lead and Cumberworth had no answers. This led to arguments on the side line between Kit Carruthers and Fairburn about what to do. Carruthers saying we needed to change to 4-5-1 while Fairburn wanting to maintain shape until miracles happened. Alas Carruthers threw his weight around until he got his own way and took Liam Windy Miller from centre forward and put him left wing switching Josh Kilner to the right and Dicky the Dickov McDickinson in to the middle of the park to try put some pressure on the centre midfield which to press had been overrun. This had an instant impact as Cumberworth started to play some football and it wasnt long before Garthwaite curled a lovely ball to the far post for the running man Baxter to bundle the ball in at the back post. Baxter claiming the ball went off his hip but it looked from the side like a Jeremy Beadle hand had popped it in. Never the less the game was now 3-1 and stayed as such till the half time whistle. Cumberworth looked sprightly at the half and discussed what to do with the formation as the next half was down hill on little Wembley. The descision was made to stick with the extra man in midfield which proved the right decision. Cumberworth, playing nice football, were again on the attack and a beautiful diagonal ball from Baxter found a delightful steering header from Garthwaite which placed in the top corner. 3-2, game on. Cumberworth were well on top at this point, any attack being thwarted by the now superb defence of Brown, Dolley, Baxter and bossed by Haigh. It wasnt long before Cumberworth were then level, again an attack down the right and a cross from Garthwaite to the back post found Miller who snook the header in at the back post. 3-3 and what a come back from a team that were completely down and out within 25 minutes. Cumberworth kept pushing and with 20 minutes left turned the game totally on its head with a 4th. Garthwaite again the provider turning his man and playing a through ball for Kilner. The defender nearly bundling Kilner over before colliding with his keeper spilling the ball to Kilner for what then proved to be a tap in. 4-3 and the crowd went beserk. Well CK, Steve, Kit and Tony did anyway. With 15 left Cumberworth made a couple of changes. Carruthers for Miller on the left and Fairburn for Dickov in the middle of the park. It wasnt long before the subs made an impact. Carruthers collected the ball in the middle of the park, passed it to completely the wrong man, which turned out to be the opposition, and Holmfirth then went on the attack from it. Won a throw in by the corner flag, a couple more schoolboy defensive errors and they were level at 4-4. Oh Carruthers you Dick!!!! What a mistaker to maker!!!! Cumberworth couldnt make any more chances count and Garthwaite resorted to some shameful diving which was minging by Snowys standards. The game ended 4-4 but felt like a loss. A great comeback masterminded by Carruthers tactics and destroyed by his feet. Head hung in shame. Once the team got going there was superb performances by Haigh, Garthwaite and Baxter to mention a few albeit the whole team were superb. To pull back a 3-0 deficit to the league leaders and be in front was nothing short of brilliant MOM - Ross Baxter
