The Championship club will travel to the Stadium of Light early next month, with third-round ties set to played January 3-6. And there’s some extra subtext for Poyet, who spent a year at Elland Road as assistant manager to Dennis Wise in 2006-07. “Of course every Sunderland fan knows about the story of 1973 FA Cup final, it was a unique game,” he told safc. “To be drawn against Leeds in the competition for the first time since that game is something special and it is an occasion I know our fans will enjoy. “A home tie is always preferred and more so this time, because of the number of games we will have played in a short period. “I know Leeds well from my time there, it won’t be an easy game – no cup games are - but it is one we will all look forward to.”
