Curfew won’t break our resolve, sayShopian residentsSep 17: Strict curfew continued to cripple normal life in main town here for the 11th consecutive day Tuesday. The curfew was imposed here on September 7 after four persons were killed in firing by paramilitary CRPF.A heavy contingent of police and CRPF manned the roads and streets in the town forcing people to remain indoors while all the entry and exit points to the town remained blocked with concertina wires and barricades.The continuous restriction has resulted in shortage of essentials including food items and medicines, locals said.“My mother is a cardiac patient butshe ran out of medicines yesterday following which her condition deteriorated. We had to shift her to hospital late in the night,” said Khalid Hussain of Baba Mohalla in Shopian town.A group of locals said there has be no major law and order problem for the past few days but the authorities were “deliberately” enforcing strict restrictions thereby piling the sufferings for locals.“They want to break our resolve and force us to give up our demand for justice to victims but we will not succumb,” said a youth Muzaffar Ahmad.Curfew was imposed in the town and its adjoining areas on September 7 after CRPF personnelbelonging to 14th battalion shot dead four persons outside their Gagren camp.However police later said three of the killed persons were civilians. They however said the fourth slainperson was a Lashkar-e-Toiab militant. This time, his identity is being ascertained. Another civilianwas killed in firing by the CRPF personnel of the same Gagren camp three days later.“We are not even allowed to moveout of our houses to purchase fooditems or medicines,” said another local Shabir Ahmad.He alleged that forces barged into many mohallas on the second day of curfew and smashed windowpanes and damaged household items.Many houses on the entry to Baba Mohalla had their windowpanes broken on the second and upper floors.“They (forces) did it. They even ransacked many houses,” said another local, pointing towards thedamage.The aspirants appearing in the Service Selection Board entrance examinations were however allowed to reach the examination centers on production of the admitcards.An official said restrictions were likely to continue for tomorrow as well.
