Despite what we think, public restrooms are no dirtier than our home bathrooms. That’s right, germaphobes, a new study has concluded public restrooms are pretty clean. Microbiologists measured bacteria and viruses in four public restrooms, and found most came from peoples skin and shoes. When the scientists closed off the bathrooms after normal use, they found bacteria from human waste represented only 15% of the germs present--and died off quickly. The vast majority of microorganisms in the restrooms were from skin or soil (presumably tracked in via shoes). But dont stop washing your hands. The skin-associated bacteria found was primarily staphylococcus, which can cause hard-to-treat infections. Overall however, the scientists concluded that our cell phones, keyboards, toothbrushes, kitchen sponges, and TV remotes harbor much more harmful bacteria than our public restrooms. That should make the germaphobes feel better...
