Curious. Im not a superstitious man. Quite the opposite really. Yet Im reminded of an obscure but relevant quote my Mr. Lennon: God is a concept by which we measure our pain. Now, I dont want to talk about Jeebus here, but Buddhist superstition. Picked up a little Medicine Buddha statue awhile back and havent though much of it. Just a pleasant reminder for me to not be an asshat. But last night I found myself chanting to the Medicine Buddha. Chanting that all of my health problems would subside so that I could continue to help others. Chanted for all people to heal and be at peace. Since then, Ive been carrying the little statue around with me everywhere. Brought it with me to the docs today when I had an abscess removed. I know Im only chanting to myself and that this is just a statue, but it also represents the nature of healing to me, the ability to heal. At least for now. Its seldom that I dive into superstition, but in times of agony and confusion ... its there waiting... even for academic sour pusses like me. Whats your take on this and all the supernatural elements of Buddhism? Idol worship is still very common among Buddhists in China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam... pretty much everywhere in the East. Do you think they do so because of tradition? Or because life can be difficult out there and its a way to place hope and responsibility into something more than themselves, or perhaps both and other unknown factors? Lennons tune would fit here now, but I think we should get a little funky.
