Curmudgeonly non-baby-related post: Is it just my imagination or do people under 30 not use idioms anymore? I remember growing up with lots of play it by ear and you scared the living daylights out of me and many others. I still use them, but not as much as I hear them from the older generation, and whenever I use them I feel old myself. I hardly ever hear those idioms from people younger than me. And I dont think I hear other idioms to replace them, other than soulless corporate-speak like touch bases, close the loop, etc. It almost seems like idioms have been replaced with snarkasm, a word which might be self-describing (https://facebook/iansimon/posts/10100390955264342). Or maybe idioms are an east coast (and presumably also southern) thing and snark is west coast? Side note 1: the Elizabeth Tseng has also noticed the same phenomenon in Chinese. Side note 2: the other day I said lets play it by ear and Gary Simon was like that expression is really overused these days. Which is false, its just that Judy Lefkowitz Simon uses it all the time.
