He was 77 years old and is survived by his wife and two sons. He has served as the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology during the UPA government. He was selected for the first time to Rajya Sabha in 2002 from Maharashtra. Now he was serving for third term. Abu Dhabi Grand Prix bagged by Lewis Hamilton On 23rd November 2014, Lewis Hamilton of Britain won the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix of Formula One racing at Yas Marina circuit in United Arab Emirates. Lewis Hamilton who is a Mercedes driver, has already won the F1 racing championship for the year 2014. Thus he had won F1 world Drivers title twice in a year. Lewis Hamilton has won the Abu Dhabi GP win with 50 points which was 14 points ahead of Brazilian driver Felipe Massa finishing the second. UPSC got new Chairman as Deepak Gupta Among the Important Appointments, On 23rd November 2014, Deepak Gupta was appointed as chairman of Union Public Service Commission by President Pranab Mukherjee in accordance with the Article 316 (1) of the Constitution. Father Chavara Achen & Sister Euphrasia conferred with sainthood by Pope Francis On 23rd November 2014, Pope Francis conferred sainthood on two Indians Father Kuriakose Elias Chavara and Sister Euphrasia. They were pronounced as saint by Pope Francis at a special mass St Peters Square at Vatican. Sunil Manohar appointed as Advocate General of Maharashtra On 18th November 2014, Eminent lawyer Advocate Sunil Manohar appointed as Advocate General of Maharashtra after his appointment was approved by State Cabinet. FIDE World Chess Championship 2014 clinched by Norwarian Magnus Carlsen On 23rd November 2014, Magnus Carlsen of Norway clinched FIDE World Chess Championship 2014 at Sochi, Russia. He defeated Noted Indian Chess player Viswanathan Anand with a score of 6.5 - 4.5. It is important to mention that he had also won FIDE World Championship last year thus he retained this title. This service was named as Pashupatinath Express. This service is aimed to boost the bilateral ties between the two neighbouring countries and also expected to give a major boost to trade and tourism. Route of the bus will be from Kathmandu to Bhairawa to Sanauli to Gorakhpur to Lucknow to New Delhi. Legendary Kathak danseuse Sitara Devi died at 94 On 25th November 2014 Legendary Kathak danseuse Sitara Devi passed away in Mumbai. She was 94 years old. Sitara Devi was a gem of Indian dance and was honoured with many prestigious awards including Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Padma Shri and Kalidas Samman. When she was just 16 years old then after watching her performance Rabindranath Tagore described her as Nritya Samragini. Apart from performing at various national and international platforms she also gave her performances in various hindi movies like Usha Haran, Nagina, Roti, Vatan, Anjali, Mother India etc. Former SC judge CK Prasad to succeed Justice Markendey Katju as PCI chief On 24th November 2014, Former judge of Supreme Court Justice Chandramauli Kumar Prasad was selected as next chairperson of the Press Council of India (PCI) by a committee headed by Vice-President Hamid Ansari. He will be succeeding Justice Markenday Katju. Justice Chandramauli Kumar Prasad was appointed as Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court on 20 March 2009 and then took oath as Judge of Supreme Court of India in February 2010. Shah Rukh Khan signed as brand ambassador by DHFL On 20th November 2014, Second largest housing finance company of India, DHFL announced the name of noted bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan as its brand ambassador. Chuck Hagel resigned as US defence secretary Among the International Current Affairs on 24th November 2014, US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel resigned from his post. He started to serve at this post from Feb 2013, though he will stay on as secretary until his successor is confirmed. Adani Power buys Avantha Groups 600 MW Korba West plant for Rs 4200 crore On 24th November 2014, Adani Power signed a binding agreement with Gautam Thapar-led Avantha Group to buy its Korba West Power Co Ltd (KWPCL) 600 MW unit at 4200 crore rupees. This unit is located at Korba in Chhattisgarh. After this deal Adani Power became the largest private sector power utility in India with an installed capacity of 11040 MW. President Pranab Mukherjee penned a book titled The Dramatic Decade New book which is titled as The Dramatic Decade: The Indira Gandhi Years is penned by President of India Pranab Mukherjee. Pakistani actress Veena Malik sentenced to 26 years in jail for blasphemy On 26th November 2014, Pakistani actress Veena Malik, owner of Geo TV and Jang group Asad Bashir Khan and TV host Shaista Wahidi were sentenced to 26 years in jail by an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) of the Gilgit region of Pakistan for blasphemy for appearing in mock Geo TV wedding scene in which religious song about the wedding of the Prophet Muhammads daughter was played in background. Shariah Equity Fund to be launched by SBI Mutual Fund Among the Important Banking Current Affairs, State Bank of India (SBI) Mutual Fund (MF) announced on 26 November 2014 that it will launch Shariah Equity Fund on 1 December 2014. The fund is aimed at attracting investments from Muslim populations of India. The fund has been approved by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, an authority that oversees the observance of Muslim civil laws in India. With this, SBI MF will become the fourth fund house in India to have an Islamic equity fund after Goldman Sachs MF, Taurus MF and Tata MF. Also, India became the second country outside the Islamic world where a state-owned bank is offering a Shariah-compliant fund. He was 88 years old. He was a Reader in Modern South Asian History at St. Antony’s College, Oxford from year 1973 to 1993. He was an Indian historian specialising in British Indian history, Indian economic history and the History of Bengal and was honoured with Padma Bhushan in 2007 in recognition to his contributions to history. New Secretary General of Lok Sabha is Anoop Mishra On 26th November 2014, Former Uttar Pradesh chief secretary Anoop Mishra was appointed as new Secretary General of the Lok Sabha by Speaker of Lok Sabha Sumitra Mahajan. MoU for cooperation in Oil and Gas sector inked between India and Mozambique On 28th November 2014, a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) was inked between India and Mozambique for for cooperation in Oil and Gas sector. This will be valid for a period of five years. Important to mention here that this MoU was signed during the India visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mozambique Oldemiro Julio Marques Baloi. It is expected to boost the bilateral cooperation on the basis of equality and mutual benefit between two countries. Mozambique plans to produce 34 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas annually from its Rovuma Area 1 offshore block - where state-run ONGC Videsh Ltd, Oil India and Bharat Petroleum Corp have bought 30 percent stake. These government bonds will be sold through Open Market Operations (OMOs) with an aim to squeeze the liquidity in the market. RBI will sell government securities maturing in different years will have different interest rates as 2017 (bearing interest rate of 8.07 per cent), 2020 (7.80 percent), 2022 (8.08 percent) and 2027 (8.26 percent). Do You Know : Open market operations (OMO) are a monetary policy tool used by RBI to increase or decrease money supply by buying and selling government bonds in the open market. Commercial surrogacy banned by Thai parliament On 28th November 2014, Commercial surrogacy was banned by voting in Thailands Parliament. It was said that violators could face 10 years in jail. After an outrage erupted over the unregulated industry following a series of scandals including the case of an Australian couple accused of abandoning a baby with Down syndrome this ban was made. Anger among the people about Thailands surrogacy trade was also increased when a Japanese man was found to have fathered nine surrogate babies. Rajiv Mehrishi nominated as Director on RBI Central Board by Union Government On 28th November 2014, Indian Government nominated 1978-batch IAS officer of Rajasthan cadre Mr. Rajiv Mehrishi as a Director on the Central Board of Directors of Reserve Bank of India. He will be succeeding Arvind Mayaram. At the time of his nomination Mr. Rajiv Mehrishi was working as Secretary of Department of Economic Affairs in Union Ministry of Finance. He has predicted that two countries may have conflict over the Brahmaputra. Though India has already protested against this project to the UN, who referred it to the International Court of Justice. Both the Court and the UN held that as the river originates in Tibet, a province of China, China was entitled to alter the course of the river to suit her. Gold imports eased by RBI, 80:20 scheme scrapped On 26th November 2014, Gold imports were eased by RBI (Reserve Bank of India) and 20:80 scheme was scrapped. Withdrawing of 20:80 scheme is aimed to cut smuggling of gold and raise legal shipments into India. In 2013, the 20:80 scheme was introduced to bring down inbound shipments, sliding rupee and to combat a huge current account deficit (CAD) along with a hike in import duty to 10 percent. Under 20:80 scheme it was mandatory to export 20 percent of the imported gold as finished products like jewellery. Initially only public sector firms and banks were allowed to import gold and later in May 2014 these rules were slightly eased to star and premier export houses. P V Sindhu defeated Kim by 21-12 21-17 in match of 45 minutes at the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion. 40 Indian prisoners released by Pakistan On 28th November 2014, 40 Indian prisoners were released by Pakistan and today they were repatriated by Pakistan government through Attari-Wagah route. Out of 40 prisoners, 35 were fishermen who inadvertently went into Pakistani waters through Arabian Sea while fishing and later they were held by the Pakistani coast guards for illegal fishing and other five were arrested in Pakistan as their travel documents were not complete. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first train from Meghalaya On 29th November 2014, First passenger train from Meghalaya was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This train is scheduled to run between Mendipathar to Guwahati. Apart from this PM Modi also laid the foundation stone of a board gauge railway line from Bhairabi to Sairang in Mizoram.
