Current Affairs of 21 October 1. Khattar to be next Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar was on Tuesday unanimously elected Leader of the BJP Legislature Party, paving the way for his becoming the first Chief Minister of the BJP in Haryana. 60-year-old Mr. Khattar is also the first Punjabi to become the Chief Minister of the State. He was elected at a meeting of 47 newly elected MLAs at the Chandigarh UT Guest House, party Vice President Dinesh Sharma, who attended the meeting along with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu as central observers, told reporters. 2. Indo-Bangladesh Joint Rafting Expedition on River Siyom, Arunachal Pradesh Indo-Bangladesh Joint Rafting Expedition was conducted on the Siyom River in West Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. The expedition was organised by Army Adventure Node Centre, Aalo, under the aegis of 5 Mountain Brigade of Indian Army from 1 October to 3 October 2014. During expedition, the team covered 85 km over three days through the rapids of the Siyom River from Thumbin to Pangin in West Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. Both team had 10 Army personnel including two officers. 3. India and China agreed to set up hotline between their army headquarters to curb incursions India and China have agreed to step up engagements between their militaries by setting up hotlines between the Army headquarters. The two sides have also agreed to establish new border meeting posts to address incidents of incursions like the one in Ladakh area that occurred in September 2014. This decision was disclosed by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying in Beijing on 20 October 2014. The agreement was reached during the meet of Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on India-China Border Affairs which was held in New Delhi from 16 October to 17 October 2014 October 2014. The two sides also reached the broad consensus on measures safeguarding peace and stability of the border area. 4. Joko Widodo sworn in as Indonesia President Joko Widodo on 20 October 2014 was sworn in as seventh president of Indonesia. Widodo emerged as the winner with 53 percent of the votes and defeated his rival Prabowo Subianto, a former general from the era of authoritarian ruler Suharto. Joko Widodo will serve a five-year term as the Indonesia President along with Jusuf Kalla, a businessman and onetime vice president under Mr. Yudhoyono. Both Widodo and Jusuf Kalla were sworn in at the national legislature before local leaders and visiting foreign dignitaries. Widodo replaced Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who stepped down after serving a maximum of 10 years. 5. UST Global wins ‘corporate learning’ awards IT solutions and services major UST Global has won four awards at the Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS)-Leapvault CLO Awards India. This is a premier business awards programme attended by leaders in corporate learning, coaching, and organisation and leadership development. The awards are based on nominations and have been attracting participation from leading global and Indian organisations. UST Global participated in six categories and was declared winner in four during the fifth edition of the CLO Chief Learning Officer Summit held in Mumbai. These included a bronze and a silver respectively for ‘Global Learning and Development Team of the Year’ and the ‘Best Blended Learning Programme’. 6. Vanita Gupta appointed as Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General in DoJ of US Vanita Gupta, an Indian-American attorney was appointed as temporary head of Department of Justice’s civil rights division (DoJ). The appointment was announced by the Department of Justice (DoJ) . She took the charge of the office, as Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General and Acting Assistant Attorney General at the DoJ from 20 October 2014. She replaced Molly Moran, who was appointed as Principal Deputy Associate Attorney General of DoJ. She was nominated by the US President Barack Obama for the post in Department of Justice’s civil rights division. Before the appointment she was serving as the Deputy Legal Director at the American Civil Liberties Union. 7. Revised GST Bill in winter session: Jaitley Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said the revised Constitution Amendment Bill to roll out GST would be introduced in the forthcoming Winter Session of Parliament. He also said the first “tranche” of compensation to States for their revenue loss arising due to phasing out of Central Sales Tax (CST) may also be taken up in the Winter Session. “Confident of introducing revised GST Constitution Amendment Bill in the Winter Session. Targeting Winter Session for transfer of first tranche of CST compensation (to states),” Jaitley told reporters. The Government proposes to implement the Goods and Services Tax (GST) from April 1, 2016, and the new Finance Commission may be set up ahead of its schedule to look into the issues related with the new indirect tax regime. The UPA Government had in 2011 introduced a Constitution Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha to pave way for the introduction of GST. 8. PM to spend Diwali with flood-hit people of Kashmir In a special gesture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Kashmir on Diwali and spend time with flood-hit people there. He made the announcement himself on his Twitter account. “Will be in Srinagar on Diwali, 23rd October & will spend the day with our sisters & brothers affected by the unfortunate flood,” Modi tweeted. Kashmir was hit by unprecedented floods last month, which caused widespread damage. Modi has already announced Rs. 1,000 crore for rehabilitation of the State and promised to do whatever else the Government can. 9. Corporation Bank launches e-Mandate service To provide a robust platform for large volume of repetitive payments, Corporation Bank has launched the e-Mandate (digital mandate) service. A release by the bank said on Friday that the e-Mandate service can be used by utility companies for monthly subscriptions/ bill payments; insurance companies for premium payment by policy holders; NBFCs and other finance companies for instalment payments; education institutions for school fee payment; and manufacturing companies. Currently, most of these transactions are done either through post-dated blank cheques or through Electronic Clearing Services (ECS). The activities under e-Mandate include collection of mandate, and scanning and uploading of scanned image to NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India). The company will collect the duly signed mandate from their customers in the NPCI-specified format and deposit with Corporation Bank. The bank will scan and capture the details and upload these to the NPCI with image and mandate data. 10. Serena beats Ivanovic in WTA Finals opener Serena Williams won her opening match at the WTA Finals on Monday, beating Ana Ivanovic 6-4, 6-4 in the Red Group for her 16th consecutive victory at the season-ending tournament. Williams came into the finals after injuries forced her out of her previous two outings and following Russian official Shamil Tarpischev’s disparaging comments about her and sister Venus. The top-ranked Williams was shaky in her opening service game, saving two break points, but still took a 4-1 lead. Ivanovic got back on serve but lost the first set when she double-faulted at 15-40 in the final game one of her seven double-faults.
