Currently, drones are largely only available for recreational use by hobbyists but companies of all kinds want to tap their potential for photography, delivery and other logistical tasks, among other usages. The Federal Aviation Administration has granted only a handful of permits for commercial drone use, though it is working on proposed rules that would open up the skies to more companies. But the quadcopter drone that crashed on the southeast lawn of the White House complex on Monday has raised new questions about the potential security challenges posed in a world where drone use is cheap, easy and everywhere — amid constantly improving technology. Despite rules banning drone flights in Washington, there are many videos online showing operators flying drones in restricted airspace, such as over the National Mall.
