Currently reading about the intersection of popular music and urban symbolism. This is one point the author sought to make: One thing that is interesting about popular, folk, or jazz music with an urban theme is that it invariably focuses on the city or on specific subareas of the city. But so far none of its deals with the larger types of metropolitan complexes... . Evidently the larger metropolitan unit is too large, too new, too abstract, or too amorphous to have taken its place as an object of sentimental identification. We have yet to hear popular expressions of attachment to these larger units in song titles such as I Left My Heart in the San Francisco Metropolitan Statistical Area, or Give My Regards to the Bos-Wash Megalopolis. Academic humour for the win! Haha
