Curtis High School is a neo-Gothic style education building located on Staten Island. Founded in 1904, it was the borough’s first high school. The property was designated a historic landmark in 1982. Curtis High was one of four major secondary schools designed by architect C.B.J. Snyder following the consolidation of New York City in 1898. Other buildings commissioned by Snyder during this period include Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, Morris High School in the Bronx, and Flushing High School in Queens. The school’s title honors local resident George William Curtis, a 19th century writer, orator, and educational reform advocate.
