Custom House Studios at Westport Quay are pleased to host to new exhibitions opening On Thursday August 28th 2014 at 7.30 pm, and continuing every day until September 21st 2014; In Physical Space by Paul Mosse and Spaces and Individuals by Thomas Richter In Physical Space by Paul Mosse. Paul Mosse is an exceptionally unique artist and one of the most interesting at work today here in Ireland. Highly inventive and idiosyncratic, Mosse uses the natural world around him for inspiration. Drawing is at the heart of his work and is the foundation from which all else follows. Paul Mosse has said of his work: There are no specific references in the work, though it may unintentionally appear to refer to the observed world. It springs from interests in space, scale and the tactile world of the senses. Many pieces are produced at the same time, where they sometimes join or divide and may be worked on and off for years. The processes (additive and subtractive) usually direct how the final image looks and involve only low-tech craft and materials. The systems and processes push the work into areas beyond conscious decision-making. The end result is textured and sculptural, and can be three-dimensional sculpture-proper, but usually it is resolved as “2 ½ D painting”. Mosse uses a variety of mixed-media to realise his works. Materials can include a range of non-traditional materials (plastic pellets, polystyrene, sawdust, nails and screws) as well as paper, paint and wood. The accumulation and manipulation of these materials result in dynamic and beautiful surfaces on his paintings and sculptures. Works that seem complete and resolved may over time be revised beyond recognition or entirely cut up and laid in a box to be reconstituted in another work. Often, individual pieces are immense, heavy and unyielding but always full of personality. Born in Kilkenny, where he still lives, Paul Mosse studied at The Chelsea College of Arts in London. He has won several awards for his work since he won the Carrolls Prize in Living Art in 1968 through to being the recipient of an Arts Council Artists Bursary in 2005. He was Artist in Residence at Ballinglen Arts Foundation in Ballycastle, Co Mayo and his works are included in many private and public collections, including Allied Irish Bank, Butler Gallery Kilkenny, IMMA, Trinity College Dublin and Crawford Municipal Gallery. He has exhibited throughout Ireland, as well as in Paris, London and Brussels. Recent exhibitions include Green on Red Galleries in Dublin (Amor Infiniti 2005), Cologne (2004 Cologne Art Fair) and New York (The Armory Show 2002). In Ireland he has exhibited in The Courthouse Gallery Ballinglen, IMMA, Gallery One Kilkenny and the Fenton Gallery, Cork. Spaces and Individuals by Thomas Richter. German artist Thomas Richter will exhibit new works in drawing and painting. Thomas Richter is from the German town Hochstadt-an-der-Aisch, which is twinned with Castlebar Co. Mayo. Previously he has worked at the Heinrich Böll Cottage residency on Achill Island, and is currently working as visiting artist at Custom House Studios at Westport Quay.
