Customer Service Corner, December 2, 2013 When I Get Where I’m Going: Recently I had a random thought about how things have evolved in my lifetime regarding how we get our road directions. I still have an old school United States road atlas for posterity’s sake, so I can show my grandchildren the “pioneer” way we used to get our travel directions. I thought I was the king of all things high-tech when I could use MapQuest for my journeys. Now we can use GPS on our way to our destination with our choice of vehicle-based systems, or smart phone. Whatever means we use to find out which way we’re supposed to go, the important thing for us is to learn to enjoy the journey. Even (and sometimes especially) the detours have a way of teaching us more about ourselves than the simple point A to point B trip. It was Ralph Waldo Emerson who said, “Life is a journey, not a destination.” Whatever variation of that quote you subscribe to, there’s something to be said for appreciating the moment you’re in and the place you are at any particular time, even if you are off the path of where you thought you might be. I admit that sometimes I struggle with the application of that thought. I have goals and dreams and sometimes want them to hurry up and get here, yet when I look back, I can see that in my pursuit, I learned important things about myself. Based on my faith, there’s only one destination that will actually live up to its billing, and it’s not here on this planet, so what do I do with this journey of life? I need to forget the past, both my successes and my failures. I should do my best to learn from the past, yet avoid setting up shop there. I need to appreciate today. Today I have the opportunity to make a positive impact, whether it’s a kind word spoken, a prayer offered, or a good deed accomplished for the benefit of family, friend, colleague, or stranger. And as I make plans for the future, I hope to do a better job of embracing the inevitable curves, dead-ends and U-turns that sometimes a part of this life. Make it a Magnificent Monday!!!
