He relates an incident from earlier this year. “A senior management professional in Mumbai experienced a ransomware attack. The message on his laptop screen asked for a ‘processing fee’ to release the data. He finally chose to pay the ransom, since it was a just couple of thousand rupees and there was sensitive data involved. He got it back,” he says. Another case of a similar professional from Bangalore did not end that well, says Duggal . The victim in this case too chose to pay, but never got the data back. Authors of ransomware , the cyberlawyer points out, can be booked under the IT Act.
