Cybersecurity Becomes a Top Priority After Data Breaches Globe and Mail (10/20/14) Blackwell, Richard A recent survey of C-Suite executives at Canadian companies has found that these organizations are taking the threat of cyberattacks more seriously in the wake of the high-profile Target and Home Depot data breaches, although most of these executives report that their organizations are not very well prepared for such attacks. The survey found that 60 percent of respondents had increased computer security budgets within the last two years. In addition, nearly 50 percent said they had grown more concerned about cybersecurity in light of recent data breaches, while 87 percent reported that their organizations are prepared for cyber threats. One way Canadian businesses have prepared for cyberattacks is by strengthening their firewalls, the survey found. However, just 23 percent of respondents said they were very well prepared for cyberattacks. Willy Kruh, the global chair of consumer markets at survey sponsor KPMG, said the findings show that companies are becoming more concerned about the threat of cyberattacks but that executives need to be better educated about such threats. Kruh advised companies to take steps to protect their sensitive information by conducting vulnerability assessments and educating employees, suppliers, and customers about the importance of good cybersecurity practices.
