Cyclists -- Obviously weve got a major conflict this weekend: The Fort Hood Challenge State Championship Races versus the Waco Wild West. Heres the deal -- Race organizers, in the past, have relied on Team Roadkill and Team Army to provide volunteer lead vehicle and wheel vehicle drivers for the various heats, Saturday and Sunday, of the Fort Hood Challenge. This year -- and last, for that matter -- the first day of the race shares the date with the Waco Wild West, a longtime popular ride with area cyclists. The big problem this year is that the Copperas Cove Chamber of Commerce, acting for the race promoter, have 20 -- count em -- 20 lead and wheels slots that must be filled by volunteer help. While I certainly cant blame you who have pre-registered for, or who have been looking forward to, the Waco Wild West. But, if you havet yet registered, I would urge you to consider giving up one t-shirt ride to give back to the sport of cycling by volunteering to help with the race. Ask a friend to help, or if you have driving age kids, ask them to help. Anyone making the sacrifice to volunteer to drive for the race should call Liz at the chamber ASAP. Her number is 547-7571. Call today. If you are planning to do the Waco Wild West, you can find all the info you need at wheelbrothers. The official Team Roadkill Ride is one of the above. You choose. Also this weekend: The Texas Mamma Jamma Ride in Austin, and the Rip Roarn Ride in Liberty Hill. Check Wheelbrothers for the details on both. --David
