Cynthia asks My oldest son is 13 and has a diagnosis of Aspergers. He is extremely intelligent in certain areas but he is very low functioning. He has no motivation or drive and he seems to live inside his own head (for lack of a better way to describe it). He only enjoys things that require thought with very little action. He doesnt enjoy anything that he has to physically manipulate. He doesnt even really like video games. He stims a large part of the day (shaking and staring at paper strips) and I have had no success getting this stimming under control (hes done it since he was 2). He has some social skills (pretty descent for an autistic kid) but mostly he just loves an audience because he loves to talk. His motor skills are very weak and the fact that he rarely uses them doesnt help. I cant punish him or bribe him to get him to do anything because nothing (good or bad) seems to motivate him. I was just wondering if anyone else has faced a similar situation because I am honestly at a loss for ways to help him. Im afraid that if things dont change soon that he will not ever be able to live independantly despite his inteligence and social skills. And it just breaks my heart because I know that there are people that are on the more severe end of the spectrum that are higher functioning than him and Im wondering if Im doing something wrong or if there is something I could try that I havent.
