Czech Heritage Fact: Tomas Garrigue Masaryk was the first president of Czechoslovakia in 1918. He married an American Charlotte Garrigue in New York and had four children including Jan Masaryk and daughter Alice Masaryk who founded the Czechoslovak Red Cross and acted as First lady. President Masaryk died before the Munich agreement of 1938. He also traveled across the United States during WWI and after to obtain financial support of Czech immigrants to donate funds for the establishment of the Czechoslovak state. Some of your ancestors may have donated and were honored in a book for their support of the new nation.
