D Day has come!!!! The last 10 years or so have seen many a film being made on Dawood Ibrahim (India’s most wanted man) albeit with different names. No prizes for guessing why that’s the case…. D-Day is the latest kid on the block. And it does come from an unexpected director, namely, Nikhil Advani who has made films like the very likeable Kal Ho Na Ho , the barely manageable Salaam e ishq and the instantly hateable Chandni Chowk to China. In spite of this, Nikhil shows great command and maturity over the genre in D-Day. The action is slick and real, the settings very credible (He gets Karachi spot on) and the camerawork impressive (Tushar Kanti Roy). The first half of the film is absolutely gripping….However, post interval, things begin to unravel so quickly that one does feel the need to take all things seen with a pinch of salt. There are references to actual events (1993 Mumbai blasts, 2013 Hyderabad blasts) which kind of give a real life context to the film and the story. It’s about India’s intelligence department (RAW) infiltrating a team of agents into Karachi to nab India’s ‘Most Wanted’ criminal. Iqbal Seth, aka Goldman (Rishi Kapoor – Boy what an actor this guy is…just getting better and better) The reference is obviously to our man Dawood…. with the hairdo, trademark glasses, the familiar moustache, and even some lines in Marathi. Having said all that, the film goes deep more into the agents’ stories than in Iqbal’s. Wali Khan (Irrfan Khan – doing what he does best) is the most detailed character of the four— an undercover RAW agent living in Pakistan with a family who he loves deeply. Arjun Rampal (agent Rudra Pratap Singh) does what he thinks is best — looks good and keeps a brooding expression throughout the film. Huma Qureshi (Zoya Rehman) - boy is she pretty or what !!!! gets plenty of screen time, but doesn’t have much scope to do, yet holds on to her character till the end. The heroes of the film are undoubtedly Rishi Kapoor and Nikhil Advani…The former for his sheer acting prowess and the latter for thinking out of the box, entering unfamiliar territory and coming out unscathed This is our own “Behind Enemy Lines”…a nice change from the usual fare that Bollywood throws at us…makes you feel good too…..
