D-Day thoughts. The terrifying memories of those poor men who landed on the beaches to free France from the clutches of Nazi Germany and make a huge dent in Hitler’s machine. Their stories told with great pathos on BBC. They look back on their friends who weren’t as lucky to grow old. Imagine if, in commemoration, all humans, collectively decided that the ultimate honour to fallen comrades was to never pick up a weapon against another living being ever again. Imagine if, instead of gathering in silent prayer or singing hymns to a deity, whether it be to thank your god for sparing your own life or to ask that deity that your fallen comrades were ushered into some kind of blissful afterlife, you arrived at the epiphany, an overwhelming sense that in the evolution of our humanity, we have to some degree become less violent and destructive…but that of course there is room for further improvement, without doubt. Your realization and insight includes the perspective that in turning to this external omniscient universal arbiter for comfort and support in your hour of need, cyclical behaviours keep running like a clock which never needs winding. I ask my deity for comfort in the loss of war, I thank it in the spoils of war, I rely on it to help me to victory. Thus I invite more of the same history to repeat itself. No. Instead, you pledge that as a sentient being, you shall never use a weapon again. It does, however have to be everybody. Imagine if this could be a universal pledge. Hippy universe I know, hippy universe.
