D. The Fog of War There is something soldiers call the ‘fog of war’ that makes following principles difficult. Don’t think that the scientific application of some principles is automatically going to produce success. There is no formula that will win a war – not even in physical warfare. War is a science that is also an art; it entails skill. Whenever we get into action, whether it is natural or spiritual warfare, there are always many variables which we cannot be accurately assess beforehand. We do not know the mind of the enemy. We do not know his resources, or his morale. There are many things we cannot know. There is always the unexpected and the unseen cropping up in natural war. Once you launch a campaign and go into action, the ‘fog of war’ immediately drops. The action is joined; then the fog drops. For a while nobody knows what is happening. You became surprised at the things you did not know the enemy had or could do. It is a very exciting time as this fog drops into leaders in any field of action, or sphere of human endeavour. It is also the cause of friendly fire incidents. This fog also descends in our spiritual walk, causing spiritual conflict. At such times, we need principles to act as solid ground and the sure guide to sound action. Principles need leadership in their application. Without leadership, principles do not produce victory. Therefore we need to be under leaders or be leaders ourselves.
