DA urges peoples organizations, LGUs to seek accreditation KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato, Aug 20 (PIA) -- People’s organizations, local government unit, academic institutions and even government organizations should be accredited with the Department of Agriculture to be able to avail of projects, an official of the agency announced. Amalia Jayag-Datukan, regional executive director of DA 12 said the accreditation of mentioned organization with the agency would ensure that government intervention are given only to legitimate farmer groups and such organizations. “This is also an effective way to prevent bogus farmer groups and non-government organizations to take a share on government’s programs and assistance which are purely intended to legitimate farmers and fishers,” she emphasized. Accreditation, she elaborated, is mandated by the Commission on Audit through its Circular Number 2012-001 dated June 14, 2012 and per DA’s Administrative Order Number 23 series of 2012 requiring all LGUs, GOs, NGOs, POs to pursue a certificate of accreditation from the Department. According to Director Datukan, main objective of this accreditation is to provide mechanism of certification to NGOs and POs that have met minimum criteria for greater transparency and accountability. “Through this, we would like also to encourage the participation of the private sector through social development and to create a better system for a stronger collaboration of the government and the private sector,” she said. Per COA circulars, POs should submit the following requirements: accomplished DA 12 Application for Accreditation addressed to Regional Executive Director Amalia Jayag-Datukan duly signed by the group’s chairman and duly accomplished form stating the background of the organization. “It is also a requirement that these POs, among others should declare their economic activities, and even their financial records,” she added. As of August 4, 2014, DA 12 had already accredited 80 NGOs, POs and GOs from the four provinces of SOCCSKSARGEN Region, to wit: North Cotabato – 27; Sultan Kudarat – 18; Sarangani – 17; and South Cotabato – 17. Meanwhile, 33 LGUs have already received their certificates of accreditation from the regional office.
