DAILY GK UPDATE - 6 - 7th July : 1. 6th BRICS Summit to be held in Fortaleza, Brazil from 15-17 July 2014 i. The 6th BRICS summit will be the sixth annual diplomatic meeting of the BRICS, a grouping of major emerging economies that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. ii. It will be hosted by Brazil, as the first host country of the current five-year summit cycle, the host city will be Fortaleza. iii. PM Narendra Modi will be attending the two-day summit of five-nation BRICS forum in Brazil next week when it is likely to give a concrete shape to establishment of a Development Bank and pitch for reforms of the UN Security Council. iv. Modi’s first participation in a multilateral meeting after taking over as Prime Minister will also give him an opportunity to meet with world leaders including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin apart from leaders of South America. v. Summit host and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has invited leaders of South American nations including those from Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuala and Surinam for the summit following on the footsteps of South Africa which invited African nations to the last years Summit in Durban. Note: 5th BRICS Summit 2013 was held in Durban, South Africa. 2. C Rangarajan sets poverty line at Rs. 32 per day in rural & Rs. 47 in Urban areas i. A panel headed by former Economic Advisor to Prime Minister, C Rangarajan sets poverty line at Rupees 32 per day in rural areas and Rupees 47 in Urban areas. ii. The panel has dismissed the Tendulkar Committee report on estimating poverty, which had suggested persons spending below 33 Rupees per-day mark in Urban areas to be considered poor.He also said that the number of poor in India was much higher in 2011-12 at 29.5 per cent of the population, which means that three out of 10 persons are poor. iii. The Rangarajan Committee was set up last year to review the Tendulkar Committee methodology for estimating poverty and clear the ambiguity over the number of poor in the country. 3. Kamla Beniwal appointed as new Governor of Mizoram i. Governor of Gujarat, Kamla Beniwal was transferred and appointed as Governor of Mizoram for the remainder of her term. 4. Vakkom Purushothaman, appointed as Governor of Nagaland i. Vakkom Purushothaman, the Mizoram Governor, transferred and appointed as Governor of Nagaland for the remainder of his term. Vakkom will continue to hold the additional charge of the office of the Governor of Tripura. Note: Margaret Alva, the Governor of Rajasthan, was given the additional responsibility of discharging the functions as Governor of Gujarat, until regular arrangements for the office is made. 5. Bihar Governor DY Patil took additional charge of West Bengal i. DY Patil, the Governor of Bihar assumed the additional charge of West Bengal as the acting Governor. ii. Patil took over the charge of the office from MK Narayananwho resigned from the post on 30 June 2014, which was accepted by the President on 4 July 2014. Narayanan became the 24th Governor of West Bengal on 24 January 2010. 6. M S Mehta appointed as CEO of Reliance Infrastructure i. M S Mehta was appointed as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Reliance Infrastructure on 7 July 2014. He took charge as CEO for a period of five years. ii. He replaced Lalit Jalan, who held the post of CEO of Reliance Infrastructure for more than seven years. 7. NABARD and SFAC signed a MoU for development of Small Farm Producers i. National Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and Small Farmers Agribusiness Consortium (SFAC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development of Small Farm Producers. ii. The MoU seeks to bring the two institutions in close coordination for implementing schemes for promotion of Producer Organisations (POs). iii. The SFAC is implementing a scheme of the Government of India whereby the Producers Organisations are given equity support and the financing banks are given credit guarantee cover to enable formation of Producer Organisations. 8. UK Foreign Minister William Hague to arrive in India today i. United Kingdoms Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, William Hague, will arrive in India on a two-day visit for the first time after the formation of the NDA government in the country. ii. The visit will focus on key areas, including ways to enhance investment, defence and security ties between the two countries. 9. Petro Kvitova crushes Bouchard to win Wimbledon title i. Petra Kvitova stormed to her second Wimbledon title in the shortest womens final since 1983 as the Czech sixth seed crushed Canadas Eugenie Bouchard 6-3, 6-0 on Saturday. ii. Kvitova, who first won Wimbledon in 2011, took just 55 minutes to end her three-year wait for a second Grand Slam crown, leaving shell-shocked world number 13 Bouchard helpless to repel a brutal barrage of 28 winners and four aces on Centre Court. iii. Playing in her first Grand Slam final since her maiden triumph at Wimbledon, the 24-year-old Kvitova produced a brilliant display of power-hitting to secure the 12th career title. 10. Novak Djokovic lifts his 2nd Wimbledon title i. Novak Djokovic defeated Roger Federer to win his second Mens Wimbledon title and seventh career Grand Slam. ii. The match went into the decider set and Djokovic shattered Federers dream of a record eighth grass court title, with score card reading 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 5-7, 6-4. iii. Victory allowed the Serb Novak Djokovic, to end a run of three successive defeats in Grand Slam finals. iv. Defeat for 32-year-old Federer, ended his bid to become the oldest Wimbledon champion in the Open Era and of breaking the record of seven titles he shares with Pete Sampras. 11. Novak Djokovic becomes world number one after Wimbledon victory i. Novak Djokovic’s Wimbledon victory returned him to the top of the latest world rankings, released by the ATP Monday. ii. Serbian Djokovic has moved above Rafael Nadal of Spain to top the rankings by 460 points. Defeated finalist Roger Federer has skipped compatriot Stan Wawrinka to claim third. Serena Williams of the United States has retained top spot in the latest world rankings released by the WTA Monday, while Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova moved up to fourth. ii. Kvitova of the Czech Republic has gained two places from sixth but still trails Li Na (China) and Simona Halep (Romania) behind Williams, who is top with an advantage of 2,550 points. Sachin Tendulkar-led MCC XI beat Shane Warne-led Rest of the World XI in Lord’s in London, UK. ii. Batting first MCC XI made 296 for 3 wickets. Aaron Finch with unbeatable 181 was the highest scorer of the match. On the other hand, Yuvraj Singh of Rest of the World XI was able to make 132 runs and helped the team to reach a respectable score of 293.
