DAILY (RAMADAN) TAFSEER DATE: YAOMUL- ITHNAYN, 13TH RAMADAN 1434AH (MONDAY, 21ST JULY, 2013 CE) ANCHOR: Yusuf Ismail Danjuma Bismihi Ta’āla Was-salātu Was-salām ‘Alal Mustafa Today’s exhortation focuses on the need to abhor and refrain from asserting facts which are outside our knowledge. This is rampant in our contemporary society for people now give fatwa without passing through Arabic and or Islamic Studies (I am not saying graduates of Arabic and or Islamic Studies are automatically qualified to give fatwa). Furthermore, we spread news (through sharing of different links on our social networks) dogmatically thereby misleading the society in its entirety. The verse in focus will tell us the position of Shari’ah on this. THE VERSE IN FOCUS Sūratul-Isrā’, verse 36 is the business of the day. And follow not (O man i.e., say not, or do not or witness not) that of which you have no knowledge. Verily, the hearing, and the sight, and the heart, of each of those one will be questioned (By Allāh) This verse needs no further elucidation as it is self explanatory. Muslims have been warned from saying what they know not, answering questions they don’t have answer for and of course, spreading false news. It is on this note that I want to warn that all links on facebook and other media must not be shared anyhow. It behoves us to share what we have knowledge or sure of. In another words, guess work (suspicion) should be jettisoned. In fact, Sūratul-Hujurāt verse 12 corroborates the verse in focus. In parts, it reads: اجْتَنِبُواْ كَثِيراً مِّنَ الظَّنِّ إِنَّ بَعْضَ الظَّنِّ إِثْمٌ... O you believe! Avoid much suspicion; indeed some suspicions are sins… The need to abide by the above divine injunction is further stressed by an hadith of the prophet (SAW) that states: إِنَّ أَفْرَى الْفِرَى أَنْ يُرِيَ الرَّجُلُ عَيْنَيْهِ مَا لَمْ تَرَيَا The worst of lies is for a man to claim to have seen something that he has not seen Summarily, we should be sure (have knowledge) of what will give or confirm as information.
