DAILY READINGS - SATURDAY John 11:39-44 “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” -John 11:40 We reach the climax of this passage, where after all of the build-up – stretching the disciples’ faith, revealing the truth to Martha about Himself and the future resurrection – Jesus instructs them to remove the stone that blocks the entrance to the tomb. Lazarus’ body has been in the tomb for four days and Martha protests, concerned about the smell that she expects to come from his decaying body. Jesus loves Martha, and does not take this as a sign of a lack of belief. He does not judge her for any doubts she is expressing, but is rich in love and compassion for her. This is the unchanging character of Jesus, for every one of us. Finally, it takes no more than a command from Jesus, and death itself is reversed. Lazarus emerges from the tomb, alive. Death is not the end of our story.
