DALLAS AFL-CIO ROCKS LABOR DAY 2014!!! President Mark York brought in a great Labor Day Dallas Shines on Labor Day For 2014, the Dallas AFL-CIO carried out the biggest and best series of Labor Day events in recent history. They stretched from Friday through Monday and included a press conference for health care in downtown Dallas, a public hearing and march in Oak Cliff, the largest Labor Day breakfast ever, and participation in a Labor Day lunch. The Texas Organizing Project, MoveOn, and the Texas Alliance for Retired Americans brought 45 protesters outside the Omni hotel on Friday. Governor Perry and other infamous anti-worker politicians were inside. Our group demanded health care benefits, especially the federally-funded increase in Medicaid benefits which Governor Perry stonewalled. The next morning at Oak Cliff Methodist, Jobs with Justice brought North Texas faith leaders and low-wage workers to discuss ways to raise wages and get our economy working again. At noon, they led a procession of labor and community activists up and down Jefferson Street. When we returned to the church, UAW Local 848s Gerardo Contreras had hot dogs and treats ready for everybody. Important pro-worker leaders like State Representative Roberto Alonzo and Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins addressed the activists. The AFL-CIO Labor Day breakfast was the biggest ever. More than 500 tickets were pre-sold, and there were long lines to buy more tickets at the event. Here are a few of the remarks from speakers: Speakers included Texas Lieutenant Governor Candidate Leticia van de Putte, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, Congressman Marc Veasey, County Judge Clay Jenkins, Texas AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer John Patrick, American Federation of Teachers leader Rena Honea, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1338 President Kenneth Day, Reverend Doctor Joerg Rieger of SMU, and others representing efforts to win wage increases and win the November elections. Dallas AFL-CIO principal officer Mark York had everybody take out their cell phones and text labor to 235246 so that we will all be kept up to date. Union activists also participated in the Dallas Democrats annual indoor picnic. It is especially noteworthy that all of the Labor Day events emphasized the importance of raising wages. County Judge Clay Jenkins, who appeared throughout the weekend, completely ignored his own need to raise money and votes. Instead, he spoke up for raising workers wages! Speakers comments and much more is posted on our web site. There are photos all over Facebook. Please like Dallas AFL-CIO, and well keep on liking you!
