DANA Air seeks Licence for Regional Operations in West Africa... DANA Air said Monday that it has applied to the Ministry of Aviation to enable it secure traffic rights for flight operations into West African cities. This is coming about nine months after the airline resumed operations after the June 3, 2012 crash of its plane at Iju/ Ishaga area of Lagos State, The airlines’ head, commercial, Obi Mbanuzo said the flight into West African cities would be concluded before the end of this year. He said the specific routes would be determined according the bilateral air Services agreements Nigeria has with the respective countries. Plans to commence flights into West African cities he said came on the heels of ongoing discussions between DANA Air and aircraft manufacturer, The Boeing Corporation. He said officials of Boeing recently visited the airline to conclude discussions on how to acquire new generation aircraft to boost its expansion growth. He explained that before the end of this year, the airline would commence operations into more domestic routes to consolidate its operations in the Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Uyo, and Calabar routes. The DANA Air commercial manager also disclosed that the airline was increasing its fleet size from current five aircraft to seven before the end of this year. He said government could assist domestic carriers by creating a more conducive environment, by implementing policy on waiver on aircraft parts, encourage more investors to consider setting up fuel refineries as well as setting up aircraft maintenance facility within the country to reduce operating costs for airlines. He said reduction in the cost of aviation fuel would assist airlines by lowering costs for operators, who are grappling with increasing costs of keeping the business afloat in a seemingly hostile business environment.
