DANVILLE — An “exemplary” ability to close the achievement gap between student groups earned Danville High School one of the most prestigious educations awards in the country. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has given out its award to just less than 7,900 public and private American schools in its 32-year history. Danville is one of only 48 high schools in the country to receive the distinction this year, said Principal Lee Gump.. “We’re on cloud nine right now. This is a tremendous award that’s been given to us,” Gump said. Danville was listed as an “exemplary achievement gap closing school,” meaning the difference in performance among the school’s subgroups of students had been improved over the past five years. Each subgroup of students also has a high level of performance and graduation rate. Gump said he was “extremely proud of our students, faculty members, staff members, administration, both school and district,” for this accomplishment. He also thanked school board members and district parents. “We’re tremendously elated this is something we achieved together as a group.” Gump said this was the first time he knew of Danville High School achieving Blue Ribbon status. Assistant principal Michelle Garman said the Riverside Elementary School was a previous winner. “I think it’s great that Danville has the recognition it so richly deserves for outstanding leadership and the outstanding teachers we have,” said Allan Schappert, president of the Danville school board. “It’s a great feather in their cap.” Three hundred and thirty-seven American schools received the award this year. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan recognized the Blue Ribbon schools in a live announcement at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday. “These great schools are fulfilling the promise of American education — that all students, no matter their name or zip code, can flourish when schools provide safe, creative, and challenging learning environments,” Duncan said, according to an official press release. “National Blue Ribbon Schools are models of consistent excellence and a resource for other schools and districts. We celebrate them for their tireless effort and boundless creativity in reaching and teaching every student,” he said.
