DAPHNEYLAND TIP - LOW STRESS HANDLING Does your dog go from calm pooch to wild thing at the vets office? Some dogs get really frightened as soon as they set foot inside and Ill be honest, I understand why they might be scared. All those strange smells and noises, not to mention memories from the last visit, add up to a stressful situation for many pets. When dogs are anxious or stressed out they can show symptoms such as pacing, shaking, panting, drooling, or even becoming jumpy and aggressive. This behavior is normal but its also something you can help change. Today I want to talk about some different methods to handle aggressive behavior at the vet, some of which are more effective than others. Some veterinary clinics will have staff try to calmly but firmly hold the dog down to do what needs to be done. This isnt heavy restraint (which isnt always a good option); rather, it is a gentle but firm restriction of movement. This is a common tactic that really can help make a vet visit easier. Dr. Susan Barrett from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine shared some tips on this technique, called low stress handling. This is great information for humane societies, pet owners who occasionally pick up strays, and those owners with dogs that go crazy at the vet. This technique can take a lot of the difficulty out of vet visits. petplace/dogs/fear-at-the-vets-office-low-stress-handling-for-dogs/page1.aspx?utm_source=Newsletters&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Behavior&utm_content=DL-20141112%20(1)%20remainder&spMailingID=21689448&spUserID=NzA0MTM5NDk3NTkS1&spJobID=441259211&spReportId=NDQxMjU5MjExS0
