DART - Disaster Animal Response Team Australia ---UPDATED 7:51pm AEST--- An absolutely devastating tragedy that is continually unfolding. Were updating as more pieces come to light & we speak with the rescues involved. Hanging on by the skin of their teeth to make it to that halo save, these beautiful dogs were finally on their road to freedom & into the loving arms of rescue, leaving the pound in their dust. But today, fate had a different story to tell for at 4 little darlins, so far, & a man driving the car that was first to collide. The details are still sketchy all round but, so far, we understand that a vehicle & dog trailer carrying precious cargo from Starting Over Dog Rescue, Dindi Animal Rescue, Second Chance Animal Rescue Inc. & Eden Ark Private Rescue & Rehome were the innocent third party after a car & a truck crashed, the rescue trailer being taken out by the truck in the aftermath. So many hearts broken right now. Why so many rescues involved? Well this is how it all works - the rescue network pull together to save these lives in a communal effort day in day out. They split the costs to save the most they can. Even right now...everyones pulling together - Thank you Rural Rescues for opening your hearts to take in the missing as they are found. Just spoken with Carmen & she is out on the lookout in the dark with some backup arriving. We love you good rescuers who do what it takes. We offered to source ground support, dinner & resources but she has it all under control & they are going to trudge on as is. Bless their little rescue socks. Some lucky ones, including the rescue driver, made it through whilst some are in a critical condition at the vet clinic as we speak & some we just dont know. And it wasnt just puppy dogs on board - there were little guineas & kitties as well. So far its understood... We have reports of 1, 2 or 4 dogs being euthanised at the scene (the rescues themselves are unsure as they were not in control of the scene but so far 1 pup dying then is the most likely) 3 dogs are at the vet clinic - at least 2 with head trauma 7 dogs are safe at the pound 3 dogs went missing - unsafe on the roads (please be on the lookout if youre in the area) - all are confirmed to still be lost. Were desperately hoping theyre found - there is a Frost Warning in Vic again tonight. Imagine their little bodies being remarkably put back together by some wonderful veterinary surgeons. Imagine the little frightened ones on the run finding their way into some loving arms. And imagine nothing but calm for them, the other little survivors, their traumatised driver & the dear folk, always in the real game of saving lives, at these rescues. Their hearts will be broken open. Starting Over have asked to not be contacted at this time. They have accepted our offer of assistance in the way of facilitated counselling if/when it feels right.
