DARWICH Mahmoud Darwish was born in 1942 in Birwa near Saint- Jean dAcre in Palestine. In 1948, his village was destroyed by the Zionist forces and his family took refuge in Lebanon. But he returned illegally to Palestine in the same year to pursue his studies. He began his career as a very young reporter while publishing his first poems . Engaged in the political struggle , he campaigned in the Israeli Communist Party , which he was imprisoned several times from 1960 to 1970 and be placed under house in Haifa. Mahmoud Darwish left Israel in 1971 and chose to exile first in Cairo , then Beirut, Tunis and Paris . Member of the Executive Committee of the PLO , he resigned in 1993 and divides his time between Amman and Ramallah. He died on 9 August 2008 in Houston, Texas. Mahmoud Darwish is widely considered one of the greatest contemporary Arab poets and this is probably the most widely read and most translated poet in the Arab world . Author of several books repeatedly republished, he became the spokesman of a whole people .
