DAVID LUIZ There are currently few players whose talent produces such divided judgement in football circles than CFC’s enigmatic Brazilian international David Luiz. His playing style and wholesome approach to life in general is as unique as his awe inspiring haircut. What cannot be denied is the ever strengthening love and elevation to cult hero status David Luiz has deservedly enjoyed throughout the stands at Stamford Bridge since he signed, especially last term thanks, in part, to the management of Rafael Benitez. Opting for the seemingly obvious choice of selecting David Luiz in a more advanced defensive midfield marauding position was key to his development towards the end of 2012. David Luiz is a rare talent that should be amplified, heralded and enjoyed. With criticism that his cavalier defending will sometimes leave CFC exposed and himself out of a passage of play occasionally warranted, to change his mindset on the field would risk losing some of the vast skills that make him a pleasure to behold. Talents like his do not come around often. CFC’s recent successes domestically, even more so in Europe and the pivotal role David Luiz has played prove there is plenty of substance behind his style. He has certainly embraced the European game since his loan move, eventually made permanent, to Benfica at the age of 19. There has not been another player, let alone a supposed defensive minded individual, at Stamford Bridge since Frank Leboeuf with the ability to spray penetrative long, raking through balls and execute sensational vision like Luiz – not to mention his set piece ability. Few players seem to relish the personal battle against a world class striker as much as he. His creativity and technique in front of goal (whether that be 10 or 35 yards out) is clear. Off the field David Luiz’s dedication to God, his family and devotion to community and the younger generation set him far apart from the majority of his peers throughout the world of modern football. No CFC fan or football purist could surely begrudge Luiz the self-styled geezer from South America and La Seleção a win in Rio at the 2014 World Cup. David Luiz took his club form last season back to his home country in the recent Confederations Cup triumph of Brazil and seemed to defend with even more gusto and composure than at times last season for CFC, his development a continuing process clearly. A lasting memory of a terrific Brazilian performance in the final against Spain will most definitely be Luiz’s gravity defying goal-line clearance. Not only do I hope and genuinely believe David Luiz will one day wear the CFC captain’s armband but I most definitely… ….wish I had curly hair too.
