DAWN NEWS ITEMS: 9/8/14 Elizabeth Cunningham, 660-745-3529, [email protected] Greetings from Dawn, MO., where the sun always comes up in the morning! Yesterday on my way to work, I saw milkweed pads that had burst open with the parachute seeds ready to float. It must be Autumn! The pumpkins are orange: no frost on them yet. However, Mother Nature may be brushing them with white sparkles soon. The kiddos are back in school and because of this, I am certain I heard a collective sign from a large group of parents recently. And aren’t we all enjoying these cool mornings? I have several mark-your-calendar reminders. David, Patricia and I are gearing up for our garage sale for Honduras this coming weekend. We will be at 903 Elm, Chillicothe, September 11, 12, 13. Stop by to browse , to buy or just to visit. There may even be some homemade snacks to enjoy as well. We would love to see you! We all especially miss Pastor Ed during our garage sales. He Always stopped by to browse, buy and visit. The following weekend will be a big one for Dawn. The Dawn School is having their reunion at the Jenkins Center, Dawn, MO., Friday evening, September 19. If you wish to attend and to enjoy the meal, please contact Nadine Etzenhauser, 660-745-3417 as she must be ordering the food soon. Casual dress is the attire of the night! The following evening, September 20, the Annual Dawn Fish Fry is scheduled at 5 PM at the Jenkins Center. Come with a hunger for good fish and wonderful side dishes. The dessert table is always glorious as well! You will see folks there you have not seen since last year, guaranteed. Opal Mantzey’s Memorial Service is scheduled for 11 AM, Saturday, September 20, at the Heritage Funeral Home with visitation prior to the service at 10 AM. Opal taught Home Economics at Southwest School for 21 years, retiring in 1975. She touched many lives in her 101 years among us. The entire obituary can be viewed at heritage-becausewecare. Tommy Jones has left after a time of poor health. Please acknowledge to Gracie Jones and her family your prayers continue with them. It has been a busy time of year for several in our little village. Randy Dinwiddie set up some of his “Making Sawdust” wears at the Chillicothe Chautauqua this past weekend. He had an attractive display as well as great help from his special family. Juanita Assel continues to mend well from her hip surgery. Two Sundays while she was not able to play the piano, she invited me to fill in as the piano player at the Dawn Baptist Church. I felt honored to be asked and I enjoyed seeing my friends and neighbors at the Dawn Baptist Church. The ARC Program on Wednesday nights at the Dawn Baptist Church is well underway. All are welcomed! This past Sunday, Reverend George Hess celebrated his 82nd birthday. Pastor Shirley Hess treated the Ludlow Community Church and the Dawn Federated Church to delicious brownies. (They were so yummy, I have requested her brownies for our garage sale.) Happy Birthday, Our Dear Reverend George! This past week, Connie Rounkles flew to San Antonio, TX., to spend time with her son, Lance Rounkles, and his partner, Young. Connie returned with wonderful stories of site-seeing, enjoying good restaurants and having a delightful visit with Lance and Young. A special birthday party was celebrated for 2-year old, Sophia Venable the end of August. Greg and Patricia Wever are always in their Height of Joy when one of their children is home. This is especially true when their granddaughters are included during these visits: and so it was when Philip and Sarah (Wever) Venable returned recently from OK. Others at the birthday celebration included Grandmother Norma Venable, Aunt Mary Jones, Great grandmother, Marilyn Wever, as well as other family members and their children. They enjoyed ice cream and cupcakes. (I understand the ice cream was home made!) And as many of you know, Greg and his brothers, have a huge garden in Utica, MO. The granddaughters had their very own baskets to harvest from Papa’s Big Garden. They enjoyed gathering tomatoes, peppers and potatoes as well as some Indian corn for their mother to do some Autumn decorating. What fun! No doubt, another generation of gardeners will carry on this Wever tradition! David and I took some time to get away and enjoy some fun activities. Recently we made a trip to enjoy “Johnny Cash Ring of Fire” at the Arrow Rock Lyceum. David chauffeured several of us for this all-day adventure including Lois Turner, Terry Taube, Shirley Tye and Jean Golden, all from Chillicothe, MO. Now David knows more of ‘our business’ than any man should! The following day, David once more put on his traveling cap and drove Lois Turner, Terry Taube and myself to Horton, KS., for the Kickapoo Pow-Wow. My cousin, Carolin Failer, and her daughter, Jess, from Calhoun, MO., met up with us. We came home with a van full of garage sale items, (yes, we stopped at every garage sale we could find), a tummy full of fry-bread and special memories of Native American traditional dress, dances and drums beating. Compliments come in many forms and I receive one of my most treasured ones recently. When Cris and Emma Talbert were young ones and when they would return to MO., to visit their grandparents, David and I would often celebrate their time here with a pancake breakfast. Cris’ daughter, Alyssa, turned 6 years old recently and Cris asked me to have a birthday pancake breakfast for her. Of course, I said “YES!” One knows they have done something right when the children grow up and come back for their children to revisit and to make their own memories. We received another Joy recently when a wedding announcement arrived. David and I attended the wedding of Joe Lockhart and Alexis Midgyett this past weekend. I have known Alexis since she was a mere 4 years old and was delighted to enjoy such a milestone in her life 20 years later. Pastor Ryan Retzer returned to Souls Harbor Church to perform the wedding ceremony and what a Blessed time to visit with him. MY! The Page Rounkles Angels is now established. If you want more information, please contact Connie Rounkles of me. Page’s birthday is the end of this month. Please send gifts of Thanksgiving to the Universe for the time we had with her. Call me with news. You know I will be calling you. Cheerio, Dear Ones, Cheerio.
