DAY 12) HOW TO GET YOUR RELEASE STARTED Promotion is a very important tool to get your release started. So here are some things you have to know when your first single has been released: 1) Don´t relax when the release-date is near. Not only the label has to do promotion when a release is comming. No, it´s important that YOU handle most of the communication. That means getting in touch with other DJs, promoters, magazines, blogs, radio stations and of course a lot of marketing guys who may help you. Make sure that your release is perfectly placed inside the biggest social media channels: Facebook, Youtube, SoundCloud, Twitter. 2) Doing a DJ promotion: That doesn´t mean to spam all the key DJs with a private mail. Either you try to find a good promotion pool who offers a mailout to maybe 500 important names or you´re doing this by yourself. That means collecting looooots of email addresses and it will definitely take a long time but in the end you also save a lot of money. Notice that not every DJ listens to an unknown artists promo because of the mass of music every day so you need to establish your mailouts aswell – make sure to keep a high quality! It is important that well known DJs play your music - thats the key to make your name more famous. When a big act is playing or charting your music you will have much more attention than a small label or a newcomer artist could ever reach. But always remind: club music is made especially for DJs so you have to decide which DJ may receive your music for free and who should better buy the stuff and support the sales this way. 3) Doing a podcast in addition to your release is also a nice tool. So you can spread the attention. You will reach more people with a podcast and probably some guys will ask for the ID of the track on minute xx:xx. If it´s your own track – chapeau! Either you upload the mix on your own channels or you get in touch with bigger stations / famous podcast series to get more reach. 4) Sharing written content when you´re doing an interview/story/feature with a magazine or a blog. This could be done by print or online. Find the perfect mixture of all means don´t do 5 interviews in 5 magazines in one month. Every magazine has it´s own special columns. Just ask what you can do for which budget. You will have to pay some money to come inside the good papers. Only a few things would be for free. Your DJ-Charts for example. 5) Doing radio interviews/live DJ mixes: This could be a promo tool too. It also depends if it´s a small internet radio or a huge radio station with 100.000+ listeners. I often combine these radio station visits with gigs when I´m on tour. I think it´s important to represent your music on local radio stations from time to time. Well I probably could add 5 more tools how to get your release started the right way but this obviously would limit the scope here ;-) Let´s also get promo started today. I´m happy to be part of the first trndmusik compilation with an exclusive track. The track is called „Amsterdam“ - only because there are live recorded elements inside which I was taking in the streets of Amsterdam. Enjoy the music, have a great weekend and for those in Muenster: CLUB FAVELA TONIGHT!!! I´m on from 03.00 – 05.30. See you! https://soundcloud/trndmusik/marc-depulse-amsterdam-snip
