DAY #12: You know how Ive been saying every day has been AWESOME, AMAZING, etc. Well, today fell a bit short. Let me explain. On our last day in Johannesburg, we were going on a Safari adventure. Our last excursion before we headed to the airport. The day started off well. Quick breakfast. Then, on the bus. Or should I say -- on the rolling prison. We left the hotel at 6:30am. We hit traffic on the way to the destination. We were told that there was an accident and that the bus driver was going to take the back roads to avoid further delay. Apparently, the back roads also had traffic. It was becoming clear, at least to me, that the Safari trip was in jeopardy. But we kept inching along -- think the 405 frwy during a rain storm with an accident ahead and its rush hour. Just awful. Finally, Bishop Ulmer made the executive decision -- Lets turn around and go back. After all, we had to check out of the hotel before we were charged another day and make it to the airport. Im surprised Bishop lasted as long as he did. We stopped at a local mini mart so people could use the rest room and get a few snacks. We arrived back at the hotel, finally paroled from the rolling prison -- at what time? Drum roll please... 12:15PM. We spent 5 hours and 45 minutes on a bus. 5 hours and 45 minutes. I thought to myself: are they trying to drive us back to Los Angeles. Needless to say, the saints of God were getting cabin fever. The once joyous, happy group -- started to turn. Pastor Steve Johnson took out his guitar and started playing. We played games. We sang. We did everything we could to keep our sanity. After spending so much time on the bus, you can image the DIM LIGHTS that spread across the bus, like a mighty rushing wind. For this unique experience, we came up with an alternative phrase to keep your light on -- we kept saying: Squint, if you love Jesus. The explanation would be too much to put in this post. Ask me about this later. Finally, we managed to make it back to the hotel, without killing anyone. God is good. We spent nearly six hours on a bus -- stuck in traffic. Oh well, no Safari this time. Ill just have to google an image of an elephant. Later that afternoon, we brought our luggage down to the bus -- around 4:00pm. Youd never guess what happened next. The bus wouldnt start. The devil. We sat there, on the bus, while they managed to give the battery a jump. Funny. The bus driver left the lights on. It was almost like South Africa wanted to keep us. But, while I love the place, the people and the culture -- its time to come home! Bye, South Africa. Bye.
