DAY 14- Read 2 Kings 6:1-7 What a bizarre story to be inserted into the Bible. These men desired God’s best and were building God’s church. You would think if anyone was worthy of divine protection, it was these guys; yet one of the workers’ tools gets worn & loose and is lost. I was asking God what He wanted to show us through this story and He pointed out a few things about building His church. The axe was a man’s natural way to put in effort & sweat to build God’s house. . . In the same way, we all have gifts & abilities within us that are like natural “axes” that we can use to get busy for the church. Your “ax” could be administrative, musical, teaching, leadership, giving, love, etc. And though it might seem reasonable to pick up our ax and get to work, there’s no guarantee that everything won’t fly loose off the handle at any given time. When the ax head was lost, the natural response would be to look for a way to buy a replacement . . . But that’s not necessarily God’s way. Elisha stopped to ask for the supernatural. When he threw the stick over the heavy ax head, the ax head floated. This is a loud example to us that God’s ways are higher than our ways (Isa 55:8-9) As we pray together asking God how He wants to build our church, let’s ask God for His ways before we ever grab our axes. Who knows, He might want to do a miracle that none of us have thought to ask. Zechariah 4:6 NLT says: It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of Heavens Armies. There’s a way that only seems natural and there’s a way that only seem like God. As easy as it may seem to wrap my head around the natural, I don’t want to forfeit the miraculous and all the adventures it brings by grabbing my ax before asking God. Unless our talents and abilities are under the lordship of the wooden stick (the cross), they will fail us and sink.
